Navy Nurses served gallantly on the hospital ships brought to Korea, taking the wounded first treated by the MASH nurses for subsequent care and rehabilitation. Many nurses also served in the Air Force shuttling medical evacuees out of Korea and back to the United States.
When there was a welcomed - and too often, brief - break from treating injured soldiers, these women went to their tent quarters which typically had dirt floors, no electricity and only their helmets filled with water to bathe. These nurses did all that and much more.Then, they might receive an order to break down the camp and prepare patients to be moved in the next few hours, only to arrive later that day at a new location with fresh wounded streaming in.
